Mayor of Peterborough welcomes Youth Exchange Students

Every Summer Rotary District 1070 tries to secure an invitation for our inbound candidates to tea with His Worship The Mayor of Peterborough in his Parlour at the Town Hall in Peterborough. Every recent year the Mayor for the time being has been delighted to agree to our request and for this summer that was Monday July 23rd 2012.

This years Mayor and his Lady Mayoress, Councillor and Mrs George Simons were delighted to welcome 4 visitors and 3 local girls who will be leaving UK to spend time with their exchange partners variously in Florida, Nevada and Missouri.

The photo was taken in the Council Chamber and shows the Mayor and Lady Mayoress with their guests, and New Generation Exchange student Jakub Holas from the Czech Republic wearing the Mayor’s Gowns. Jakub who is completing 3 months of vocational internship which has included a role as a mentor for young people at the Voyager Academy in Peterborough and is currently shadowing a City Council officer in Diversity in his pursuit of knowledge in his Migration subject which leads him to study for a PhD at Charles University, Prague this October.

Also pictured are visitors Maddy Bacon from Missouri, Rebecca Matley from Nevada and Jacqs Carroll from Florida. All of them having had up to 3 weeks here in a family home and have visited cultural sites as varied as Warwick Castle, Cromer Beach, The Globe to see The Taming of the Shrew, a working mill, historic Stamford, Peterborough Cathedral and having delivered talks to their host Rotary Clubs will be taking their guests back to their home country to show them the Culture of their own area. Our Outbound local candidates, also in the photo, include Hannah Bowley, Emma Ward and Sophie Chatfield are all excited and looking forward to their part of this superb Rotary Exchange Programme.

Rotary District Youth Exchange Officer, Colin Yarwood, who was also present, expressed his pleasure and appreciation to the Mayor for making these young peoples day. Colin said that the increasing number of youth exchanges sponsored by local Rotary Clubs from an ever increasing area of our District would hopefully be continuing to develop in 2013 – talks to schools are already being booked for September and October.
